Sitka is a city in Alaska, on Baranof Island, in Alaska's souther panhandle.

When Alaska was claimed by Russia, Russian colonizer established a settlement there, in 1799. In 1808 that settlement, then known as Nova Archangel, was made the capital of Russian Alaska.

Sitka remained the capital, when Russia sold Alaska to the United States, in 1867. Juneau, Alaska's importance had significantly surpassed Sitka's during the Klondike Gold Rush, and it was made Alaska's capital, in 1906.

The United States Coast Guard has maintained a presence, in Sitka, since 1944. As of 2022 the Coast Guard maintains an air base in Sitka, and mooring facilities in the harbor. As of 2022 the buoy tender USCGC Kukui is the sole vessel permanently based in Sitka. But the Coast Guard started to expand its port facilities to accommodate a new Sentinel class cutter.
