Dr. Ajay Prakash[1] is an Indian researcher, academic, and clinician widely recognized for his significant contributions to the fields of oral and maxillofacial pathology, cancer epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, molecular biology, DNA profiling, and immunology. Born in Vijayawada, India, his early life was shaped by his father, P.S. Rama Murthy, a government police officer, and his mother, P.S. Uma Rani, a homemaker married to Dr. Sushma Bushan, a dentist and nutritionist.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Ajay Prakash conducted groundbreaking research under the guidance of Professor Anjali A. Karande at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India. His research focused on P53 expression in head and neck cancer, with a particular emphasis on biochemistry. Additionally, he explored DNA fingerprinting in human dental pulp under the supervision of Dr. GV Rao at the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD). This involved utilizing techniques such as PCR and SSCP, investigating amelogenin gene expressions, and exploring HLA DQ a gene expressions with applications in molecular biology.

Career

In 2001, Dr. Ajay Prakash embarked on his academic career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dentistry, Division of Oral Pathology/Microbiology at K.G.F University of Dental Sciences, affiliated with Bangalore University. Subsequently, he held the position of Reader at Kamineni Institute of Dental Sciences, Narketpally, affiliated with Dr. Y.S.R. Medical University, Vijayawada, India, within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

During his tenure, Dr. Prakash conducted research on the forensic effects of heat on extracted teeth and performed a comparative immunohistochemical analysis of Langerhans cells in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Dr. Ajay Prakash has received various prestigious awards, including the 1st Best Scientific Paper Award in Amelogenin Gene at the 9th National Conference of Indian Academy of Oral Pathologists in December 2000. He also received the Dr. RM Mathur Best Publication Award in HLADQ€ a Gene Marker for Human Identification in Vol VIII, Issue-1, 2004, and the 2nd Best Scientific Paper Award in Chelioscopy at the 22nd State IDAAP Dental Conference.

Cancer Research

Ajay Prakash is a trained oral pathologist and oral oncologist whose research focuses on the links between normal cells and cancer cells. Through his results, he showed the presence of the role of langerhans cells in oral mucosa, oral lichen planus and oral squamous cell carcinoma,p53 expressions in oral squamous cell carcinoma, and Pre-cancerous lesions. He has investigated Microenvironment – A Role in Tumour Progression and Prognosis, and mechanisms involved in tumor progression and invasiveness toward metastasis could be essential to improve efficacy of current therapeutic interventions with significant clinical impact.

Forensic Dentistry

Ajay Prakash is also known for defining and characterising the teeth' role in Forensic Dental Science, also the role of Lip prints (cheiloscopy). Lip outline forensic sciences in Forensic Dentistry.

In 2014, he prospectively identified the Lip outline: A new paradigm in forensic sciences , study was to assess the distribution of lip outline patterns among males and females and to evaluate the uniqueness of lip outline patterns.

In 2015, he also studied and observed Scorching effects of heat on extracted teeth-A forensic view, investigated structural damage in freshly extracted teeth to heating, at different temperatures for a certain length of time in the laboratory, Evaluated the incinerated dental remains may provide additional forensic investigative avenues in victim identification because of the consistency of morphological changes, the histological patterns at temperatures that are commonly encountered in common domestic fires.

In 1999, studied and researched Lip prints (cheiloscopy). External surface of the lip has many elevations and depressions forming a characteristic pattern called lip prints, examination of which is referred to as cheiloscopy. This is unique for individuals like the finger prints. This characteristic pattern helps to identify the individuals since it is unique for individuals. When the lines are not clear (Only the shape of lines is printed), individual identification of human beings based on this trace is extremely difficult, unless the trace contains more individual characteristics like scars, clefts etc, and often identification ends with group identification.
