Francis William Austen
Francis William Austen was an officer in the Royal Navy.[1]
He was the eldest son of Frank Austen, and his wife, Mary, and a nephew of Jane Austen, the well-known author. He was born in Portsmouth, when his parents provided a home to his grandmother, his aunts, [[Cassandra and Jane, the novelist, and family friend Martha Lloyd, who would later become his father's second wife.
His father, and uncle Charles Austen, were both officers in the Royal Navy.[1] Francis William Austen joined the Royal Navy in 1822, enrolling in the Royal Navy College. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1828, and, in 1841, was commission as first a Lieutenant Commander, and then a Commander.
He married Frances Palmer Austen, the third daughter of his uncle Charles, in 1843.[1]
