Muhammed Khan Tumani is a citizen of Syria who was held for almost eight years in extrajudicial detention in the United States's Guantanamo Bay detention camps, in Cuba.[1] The Department of Defense reports that Tumani was born on January 7, 1982, in Halab, Syria.
He was only seventeen years old when his incarceration began and has been hold for some time in solitary confinement without access to his father. He attempted suicide while in Guantanamo.[2]
Muhammed Khan Tumani was transferred to Portugal on August 28, 2009 while his father Abdul Nasser Khantumani who was also in Guantanamo was transferred to Cape Verde.
Background
Tumani testified that his father had immigrated to Afghanistan to establish a restaurant, and that he and the rest of his extended family traveled there to join him, after he had established himself, when he was eighteen, shortly before al Qaeda's attacks on September 11.[3][4] He testified that neither he or his father had ever had any association with hostilities. He testified that in spite of always being cooperative he was repeatedly threatened with torture in Guantanamo.
He was transferred to Portugal on August 28, 2009.[3]
