Corero Network Security (formerly Top Layer Security) is a provider of intrusion prevention systems. The company is headquartered in Hudson, Massachusetts and has additional offices in the United Kingdom with representation in France, Spain, Taiwan, and Malaysia.[citation needed]

History

1997: Founded as BlazeNet

Top Layer Security was founded in 1997 as BlazeNet, Inc. by Barry Spinney and a small group of engineers who had all previously worked at Digital Equipment Corporation.[citation needed]

1999: Renamed to Top Layer Networks

The BlazeNet team brought their first product to market, an advanced L4-L7 switch called the AppSwitch. During this time the Company changed its name to Top Layer Networks, Inc.[citation needed]

2000–2007

The Company’s product line expanded beyond the AppSwitch into a series of network security appliances, including AppSafe, IDSB, DCFD, Secure Controller, and Attack Mitigator. In 2002, the Company introduced its first network intrusion prevention system, the Attack Mitigator IPS. Its second generation IPS, the IPS 5500, became the flagship product in 2005. During this time, Peter Rendall became CEO. Rendall, formerly of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Logica and remains there today together with several of the original founders, including Barry Spinney.[citation needed]

2008: Rebranded as Top Layer Security

In 2008, the Company began doing business as Top Layer Security and continues today as a private company, its products competing against IPS products from Cisco, McAfee, IBM, HP, Juniper, and Sourcefire.[citation needed]

2011: Corero Acquires Top Layer Security

On March 2, 2011, Corero plc (AIM: CORO) announced the acquisition of Top Layer Security. With the launch of eight new IPS products in 2010, Top Layer saw the opportunity to approach the market as a public company as the best way to accelerate its market penetration. Corero plans to build a network security business with Top Layer providing the core platform.[citation needed]

2011: Top Layer Security Renamed Corero Network Security

On June 15, 2011, Corero plc (AIM: CORO) announces Expanded Strategic Direction and renaming of Top Layer Security to Corero Network Security.[citation needed]

2011: Corero Launches New DDoS Defense System

On June 15, 2011, Corero plc (AIM: CORO) Corero Launches the Industry's First Application- and Network-Layer DDoS Defense System.[citation needed]
