In September 2009 the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced it would authorize building a class of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels and a Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard.[1] The new OOSV would replace the CCGS Hudson, which was built in 1963. The three new OFSVs would replace four vessels, the CCGS Wilfred Templeman, the CCGS Alfred Needler, the CCGS Teleost and the CCGS WE Ricker.

The OOSV would be 90 metres long.[1] The OFSV would be 67 metres long.
