The Robo-Smasher is a device featured in several branches of the Transformers franchise.
History
Generation 1
Animated series
In The Transformers, the Robo-Smasher was introduced as a tentacled machine employed by Megatron to reprogram robots for his own purposes. The most infamous victims of this outrage were the Constructicons, who went from peaceful builders to monstrous destroyers with the ability to combine into Devastator. Omega Supreme hunted down his former friends and attempted to reprogram them, unaware that the Robo-Smasher's effects were irreversible, and was later subjected to the Robo-Smasher by their treachery. Fortunately, he escaped before he could be turned in Megatron's obedient slave, but was left stripped of all emotion but anger and lust for vengeance.
It is unknown whether any other Transformers were affected by the Robo-Smasher in Generation 1, as it was never featured again-not even when Megatron had the Combaticons reprogrammed.
Robots in Disguise
Fun Publications
Another version of the Robo-Smasher was featured in a version of the
Robots in Disguise continuity, where it was used by
Megazarak on the
Build Team and
Team Bullet Train to create new Decepticon minions. This version employed shell programs-previously introduced in
Beast Wars-to transform the heroic Autobots into evil menaces with new personalities. The group's combined forms of
Landfill and
Rail Racer became
Devastator and
Dominus Trannis, while their individual components were also changed:
Wedge became
Bonecrusher,
Railspike was made into
Astrotrain,
Grimlock was reborn as
Scavenger,
Rapid Run became
Steamhammer,
Heavy Load was made into
Long Haul,
Midnight Express was reborn as
Loco, and
Hightower retained his name despite the change.
Defensor would later endeavor to regain Team Bullet Train after the Build Team-turned-Constructicons were drawn into the events of
Transformers: Universe by
Unicron, but was unable to restore them and forced to destroy the shells of his former comrades.
