Steinberg Awards
The Kennedy Center grants annual awards to deserving playwrights, ever year. The awards were made possible with funds from Harold Steinberg and Mimi Steinberg, in 1974. The first award was the Harold and Mimi Steinberg National Student Playwriting Award.[1] Its receipients were newcomers to writing plays, and first prize was, initially, $2,500.
In 2008 the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust announced two additional awards, the Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award and the Steinberg Emerging Playwrights Award.[2] Distinguished Playwright Awards "honor a mid-career playwright, whose work has been previously recognized". They receive a cash prize of $200,000. Two Emerging Playwrights Awards are given each year, " two young playwrights whose work shows promise." They each receive a cash award of $50,000.
