Shelley Lake (born 1954) is an American artist whose work explores the intersection of science, art, and technology.[1][2] A pioneer of simulation-based new media art, Lake partners with technology at the intelligent interface to create images that appear to be taken from a science fiction movie. She gains inspiration from the aesthetics of video games and surrealism to offer a look at society with its aspirations, anxieties, and cultural icons.[3]

Her experimentation with the digital domain began in 1976 at Brown University.[4] Lake was a Technical Director for the Academy Award-winning The Last Starfighter (1984) and the Director of Polly Gone (1988).[5]

Early life, education, and influences

Early Life

Lake was born in Miami, Florida. Her interest in art began at an early age. As a teenager in Orlando, Florida, Lake was published in the Orlando Sentinel and won a cover design contest for “The Padded Cell”.[6] In addition to drawing, she also took an interest in conventional darkroom photography. At the age of 13, she processed and developed photographs at home in a bedroom closet. In 1971, Lake illustrated the cover of the Edgewater High School Senior Year Book.[7]

Rhode Island School of Design (1972-1976)

As an Illustration major at the Rhode Island School of Design, Lake took an interest in new media art, after watching one of the first computer-animated films, Hunger, by Peter Foldes. Lake received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design in 1976.[8][9]

After graduation from RISD, Lake continued her education in the Computer Science Department at Brown University, where she would be exposed to machine language programming fundamentals.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1977-1980)

In 1977, Lake transferred from Brown University to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She earned a Master of Science degree from MIT and became the first female graduate of the Architecture Machine Group, the institution now known as the Media Lab. At MIT, Lake trained with Nicholas Negroponte and Harold Edgerton, pioneers in the fusion of science, art, and technology.[10]

In 1979, the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT awarded Lake a Fellowship. Lake collaborated with Pat Hearn to direct and produce several short-form media projects, including Artificial Intelligence and Seizure.[11][12]

In 1980, Lake moved to Los Angeles, California, where she would spend the next decade working in the motion picture arts. Her career in computer graphics began at Editel Hollywood, a video post production company, where she worked as an Electronic Graphic Designer.[13]

Digital Productions (1982-1988)

In 1982, Lake joined Digital Productions, a computer animation company founded by John Whitney, Jr. and Gary Demos. She was a Technical Director for several motion picture projects, including The Last Starfighter and Polly Gone. Lake earned a Clio award, placed first in an AT&T image contest, won the NICOGRAPH Still Picture Grand Prize, and a Silver Medal from the International Film and Television Festival of New York[14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

In 1988, Lake turned her incisive eye on the art world. In collaboration with Richard Duardo, she mounted an exhibition of “generic art” at a major Los Angeles art gallery.[21]

Manual Medicine (1989-1999)

In 1989, Lake focused her energy on developing a healing arts practice. She trained at the School of Integrative Psycho-Structural Bodywork, the Upledger Institute, the Shiatsu Massage School of Santa Monica and the Guild for Structural Integration. She became a practitioner of Trigger Point Therapy, Acupressure, Shiatsu, Structural Integration, Visceral Manipulation, and Craniosacral Therapy. Lake was briefly employed as a Shiatsu Therapist at the Shiatsu Massage School of Santa Monica.

In 1991, Lake completed her premedical prerequisites at West Coast University and began her Chiropractic Doctorate program the following year. At Cleveland Chiropractic College, Lake specialized in Manual Medicine, Anatomy and Kinesiology, In 1995, she published “Essential Orthopedic Tests”, a self examination aid for students.[22]

In 1997, Lake earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree, graduating with honors and winning the Clinic Excellence Award from Cleveland Chiropractic College.[23]

Lake continued her postdoctorate education to include training as an Emergency Medical Technician and Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapist.

Sky Lake Studios (1999-2018)

In 1999, Lake established Sky Lake Studios, a fine art reproduction and digital restoration facility. She gained recognition as a service provider for fine artists, photographers and museums. Lake reproduced original art from almost any medium, including watercolors, oil paintings, and digital images.

Her practice involved photographing original art with a high-resolution one hundred megapixel digital scanning back, adjusting the capture in Adobe Photoshop, and printing the image with a large format inkjet printer. Not rushing anything, Lake typically reproduced the art in the same medium as the original, such as canvas or watercolor paper.[24]

In addition to her commitment to museum quality printmaking and digital restoration, Lake maintained a foothold in the fine arts community, exhibiting her artwork in major galleries and institutions throughout the world.

School of Visual Arts (2019-2021)

In 2019, Lake returned to academia, attending the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Under the guidance of Department Chair, David Ross, Lake wrote “Language of the Body”, her Thesis exploration of the mind body relationship. While attending SVA, Lake also wrote “Vitruvian Man” and “The Subliminal Seduction of Marcel Duchamp”. In 2021, Lake received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts.[25]

Lake now lives and works in both Henderson, Nevada, and Los Angeles, California, where she continues to build her art practice.
