Overview

Sandy Wilbur has been the President of Sandy Wilbur Music, Inc. since 1982. Throughout her career, Wilbur has consulted for a wide range of clients, including law firms, advertising agencies, film and television companies, record labels, and music industry professionals. Her expertise has been significant in numerous high-profile copyright infringement cases.[4] She studied composition, performing, and music theory at Sarah Lawrence College, followed by ethnomusicology at UCLA.[5][6]

Sandy Wilbur Music, Inc. covers some of Wilbur's creative projects, which include:

Educational

Learning History Through Music is an educational project for grades K-8 designed to inspire students and help them understand pivotal moments in American history.

"Learning History Through Music" includes videos of the different historic periods, along with songs composed and produced by Sandy Wilbur, and sung originally by four third-grade girls and a fifth-grade rapper.[7] "We the People" is based on the Preamble to the US Constitution. It serves as a learning tool for young singers and provides a good addition to any core choral curriculum. "We the People" incorporates Wilbur's fun musical setting to teach and reaffirm the democratic fundamentals on which the government of the United States was founded.[8] "We the People" was also arranged for high school and adult choral groups by TONY and EMMY Award-winning arrangers Larry Hochman and Judith Clurman.[9] "Four Score and Seven Years Ago" is about the Gettysburg Address, and "She Still Carries A Torch" is about the Statue of Liberty, and the project is ongoing. In 2014, Sandy Wilbur Music published the book Learning History Through Music, which includes important highlights, and core-aligned lesson plans for grades 4 – 8,[10] followed by activity ideas and sites teachers might explore. Lesson subjects focus on history, social studies, civics, English, and music, followed by a lyric sheet (for non-music applications) and sheet music for each song.[11]

Songwriting and producing

As a songwriter, Wilbur has had numerous songs recorded. Her biggest hit, "Hit 'N Run Lover," sung by Carol Jiani, peaked at #4 on the Billboard Dance chart in 1981 and reached #1 on the French Club Charts.[12] Carol Jiani also sang eight other released Wilbur songs, but "Hit ‘n Run Lover" became her signature song, released in various formats, on different labels, and in compilations of electronic, funk, soul, Hi NRG, and disco at least 79 times.[13] It was also used in the film and soundtrack album for the comedy Paramount Pictures film "Kiss Me Guido".[14]

Starting in late 1981, while an associate music director for the advertising agency Benton and Bowles, and later in her own production company, she composed and produced the music for several Schlitz Malt Liquor Beer commercials that featured well-known R&B and Rock groups. In addition, she composed and produced music for P&G products, Wendy's, Tyco, Hardee's, and Coors Beer jingles featuring the Country singer Lee Greenwood, among many others.[15]

Forensic musicology

Around 1990, Wilbur began a transition to forensic musicology as a number of musical issues were being challenged, including sample rights, sound-alike, licensing, public domain, and copyright infringement. More recently, she represented Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke as a forensic musicologist, and testified in the important and controversial "Blurred Lines" case. She also was the musicologist who reviewed many "traditional" songs to determine their public domain status or valid ownership for T-Bone Burnett and the Coen Brothers' 2000 film and soundtrack album "O Brother Where Art Thou," which won a Grammy for best album of the year.[16][17] She continues her work as a forensic musicologist and is often asked to speak at several law schools and conferences, including NYU,[18] Vanderbilt, the University of Colorado at Boulder,[19] and Berkeley Law School Pro Bono Program in conjunction with the California Lawyers for the Arts podcast,[20][21] among others.
