Early Life

Ruth Kasckow is an American flutist, teacher and Body Mapping Educator who was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Ruth’s parents Marie and Theodore Kasckow were musicians and music educators and were her first teachers in piano and flute. Ruth studied flute with Bonnie Lake of the Baltimore Symphony at the Peabody Preparatory and continued with her flute studies with Bonnie Lake at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland where she received her BA in Music. After teaching for two years in Baltimore City Public Schools, Ruth continued her flute studies at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, studying with David Shostac, receiving her MFA in flute performance. Ruth’s flute studies include master classes with Jean Pierre Rampal, Julius Baker, Andreas Blau, Liisa Ruoho, Toshio Takahashi, and private study with Keith Underwood, Jim Walker, and Liisa Ruoho.

Career

Ruth joined the Orquesta Mexicana de la Juventud in Mexico City as principal flutist and remained in that position for seven months. She returned to Los Angeles to pursue her free- lance career in local orchestras including Opera a la Carte, Santa Monica Symphony, and Burbank Symphony. She continued performing in woodwind quintets, solo recitals, local orchestras, and other chamber music ensembles. Ruth is currently performing flute and piano concerts with pianist Bryan Pezzone and with Avanti ensemble. Ruth has continuously maintained a private flute studio for the last forty years. In addition, she taught flute at Pasadena Conservatory of Music, Pasadena Suzuki Music Group, and La Canada School of Music. Ruth became a licensed Body Mapping Educator in 2010 and has presented many Body Mapping workshops for conferences, universities, and master classes. Her workshops and classes include presentations at the Performing Arts Medical Association, National Flute Association, Cal State University Northridge, Musician’s Union Local 47, and Music Teachers Association of California. 

Ruth is also a Franklin Method Educator Level 1 and Level 2 and currently working on Level 3, and a certified Suzuki Flute Teacher. Ruth is a past board member and the current membership chair for the Association of Body Mapping Educators, and a member of Musician’s Union Local 47, Music Teachers Association of California, the National Flute Association, and the Performing Arts Medical Association.   Ruth has two solo CDs for flute and piano self-published under www.flutemuse.com called French Impressions for Flute and German Expressions for Flute. She has also published the books The Flute Duet Practice Books 1 & 2 for two flutes, and the Chinese Folk Song Suite for flute quartet. She has written articles on Body Mapping which have been published in The California Music Teacher and The Journal of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers.
