The Practicing Oral Pathologists & Microbiologists Association (POPMA) is a professional body of practicing oral pathologists and microbiologists formed in 2023 by Dr. Bhuvan Nagpal, a dedicated Oral Pathologist and Clinical Biochemist. POPMA is registered under section 9(1) of the Haryana Registration and Regulation of Societies Act, 2012 with Registration no. HR/12/2023/01797 dated 29th September 2023.[1]

Overview

The Practicing Oral Pathologists & Microbiologists Association (POPMA) is a professional body of practicing oral pathologists and microbiologists formed in 2023 by Dr. Bhuvan Nagpal, a dedicated Oral Pathologist and Clinical Biochemist. POPMA is registered under section 9(1) of the Haryana Registration and Regulation of Societies Act, 2012 with Registration no. HR/12/2023/01797 dated 29th September 2023. This organization is committed to make a positive impact on society by empowering Oral Pathologists in India.

Mission of POPMA

• To promote the specialty practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology & Oral Microbiology

• To promote Oral Pathology & Microbiology as a career by making MDS Oral Pathology & Microbiology degree as one of the requisite qualifications to sign the laboratory reports/authorized signatory for lab reports.

• To elevate the scientific and professional status of those practicing this specialty of dentistry/medicine/pathology

• To promote the highest standards in education, research and the practice of Oral Pathology and Microbiology

• To represent and promote the value of oral pathology & microbiology to other medical and dental organizations, legislative bodies and government agencies.

• To encourage closer cooperation of oral and maxillofacial pathologists with clinicians of different specialties and with other medical/dental/pathology/biochemistry/microbiology organizations.

POPMA Membership Criteria:

• Candidate must be of Indian origin and should be 21 years or above at the date of enrolment.

• Candidate must hold a professional (bachelors or masters or doctoral degree) in any of the disciplines: Oral Pathology & Microbiology, Medicine, Dentistry, Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Laboratory Medicine, Forensic Medicine & Odontology, Biotechnology, Biomedical & Engineering Sciences and Veterinary Sciences

• Qualifications:BDS/MDS/MBBS/MD/DCP/MS/DNB/DM/MCh/BVSc/MVSc/BTech/MTech/BSc/MSc/PhD from recognized universities and respective medical/dental/veterinary councils/AICTE/UGC.

• The candidate must have active interest in the practice/teaching/research of oral and maxillofacial pathology & oral microbiology.

• Candidate must not have been convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude and imprisonment of one year or more.

About Academy of Oral Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (AOPLM)

• Academy of Oral Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (AOPLM) was constituted under the aegis of POPMA in the 2023 to impart quality training in oral pathology and laboratory medicine to the members of POPMA.

• Currently, it’s offering observership program and fellowship course based on the duration of the course.

Vision and mission of the AOPLM is:

• To impart training of qualified professionals & encourage the study of niche areas of diagnostic oral & maxillofacial pathology and laboratory medicine.

• To protect the public interest by maintaining the standards and advancing the practice of the specialty of oral and maxillofacial pathology.

• To determine the competence of those wishing to practice the specialty of oral and maxillofacial pathology through evaluation of their credentials and the examination of eligible candidates.

• To issue certificates to those who successfully complete the certifying examination administered by the AOPLM.

• To serve the public, the dental and medical professions, hospitals, and dental and medical schools by maintaining a list of fellowship certificate holders of the AOPLM.

POPMA has created Helpline of Oral Pathology Enquiries (HOPE): Any oral pathologist can call on the helpline no. for his queries related only to the specialty practice of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and it's allied aspects (histopathology, cytopathology & FNAC, hematology, clinical biochemistry, clinical pathology, infectious disease serology, immunology, microbiology, molecular pathology and genetic testing). Queries may include medico-legal aspects, establishment of new oral and general pathology lab/diagnostic centre, lab management and it's economics etc.
