Laurie Patton is an Australian public interest advocacy and communications practitioner, social commentator,[1][2][3][4][5] and a former journalist and media executive. He is currently Vice-President of the Telecommunications Society of Australia (TelSoc).[6][7][8][9]

Career

Now active in the non-profit sector Patton is a former CEO / Executive Director of Internet Australia,[10][11] the peak body representing the interests of Internet users and a chapter of the global Internet Society, where he initiated an ongoing campaign for #BetterBroadband.[12][13][14][15]

Shortly after joining Internet Australia Patton told a parliamentary inquiry the drafting of the controversial Date Retention Act (Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Amendment (Data Retention) Act 2015) was "a monumental stuff-up" and “fundamentally flawed”.[16][17][18][19][20] He subsequently commented on matters such as digital literacy, broadband policy,[21][22][23][24] and the media.[25]

Patton is a former executive at the Seven Network.[26][27][28][28] He created the World Movies Pay-TV channel[26][11] and was founding CEO of community station TVS (Television Sydney).[29]

Patton has held for-profit and non-profit board roles, including at the National Heart Foundation of Australia[30] and the NSW Film & Television Office (now Screen NSW).[31] As deputy chair of the FTO he initiated and led the first official Australian delegation to the Shanghai International Film Festival.[32][33] He was a member of an expert panel for a review of the Indigenous broadcasting and media sector for the Australian Government.[34]

Since joining TelSoc Patton has continued to campaign for repair of the National Broadband Network (NBN)[35][36] and has advocated the allocation of government Coronavirus stimulous funding for the employment of retrenched workers to be deployed to upgrade the NBN.[37][38][39]
