History

Established in 1874 in Dhaka, the Mohsinia Madrasa was modeled after the Calcutta Madrasa and received financial support from the Haji Muhammad Mohsin Fund. Initially known as the Dhaka Madrasa, it served as the first government educational institution for Muslims in East Bengal. The esteemed scholar and linguist Baharul Uloom Maulana Obaidullah Al Obaidy Suhrawardy served as its first superintendent. Until 1915, the Haji Muhammad Mohsin Fund covered the madrasa's expenses. However, in that year, it transformed into a higher madrasah. Subsequently, in 1916, the Anglo-Persian section of the madrasa was segregated and rebranded as the Dhaka Government Muslim High School.

Following this, in 1923, the Madrasah evolved into Islamia Intermediate College. Later, upon the dissolution of Islamia Intermediate College in 1962, the college branch assumed the name Islamia Government College, while the school branch became Islamia Government High School, Dhaka. In 1972, the college was renamed Kabi Nazrul Islam Government College. Subsequently, it became affiliated with the National University of Bangladesh and transitioned to the University of Dhaka on February 16, 2017. The college boasts a well-stocked library housing over 40,000 books and a residential hostel, known as Shaheed Shamsul Alam Hostel, situated on Mohinimohan Das Lane in Farashganj.
