Fretello is an AI-based musical education app that teaches guitar through interactive learning content. The application is available on iOS, macOS, and Android platforms.[1]

Founded by Florian Lettner (CEO) and Wolfgang Damm (CTO) in 2016, Fretello’s headquarter is based in Linz, Austria.[2] The app is offered as a subscription service model.[3]

Introduction

The application is available on iOS, macOS, and Android platforms as a free download with an optional subscription that unlocks all the app’s features.[1] Those features include AI-powered technology that listens to the user via their smartphone’s microphone and a Song Trainer that teaches guitarists how to play songs in small sections.[3] The app analyzes whether the user has played notes and chords correctly and provides feedback.[4]

The app takes a guided approach to its content. Users are led through playing exercises, practice opportunities, and songs.[2] The app listens to your practice and adapts the lessons dynamically according to your speed and skill. The app uses algorithms to track the progress, enabling users to see their learning journey along with related content.[5]

History

  • In 2016, Fretello was founded in Austria by CEO Florian Lettner and CTO Wolfgang Damm.[2][6]
  • In 2020, Apple inc and Google named Fretello their "favorite app".[2][6]
  • Fretello was featured prominently in the Apple Store as part of Apple's "Back to School" campaign.[7]
  • In 2019, Fretello was selected as one of the first partners to integrate the "Sign in with Apple" function.[8][9] The login feature aims to become an alternative to the login options of Facebook and Google, ensuring more data protection.[10][11]
  • In 2019, Fretello presented a new Machine Learning video analysis technology at Apple's WWDC that recognizes the user’s hand and finger placement while they play on camera as it teaches them the dexterity to play chords.[12]
  • In May of 2020, the Fretello app was featured in the App Store, as the App of the Day.[13]
  • It was featured among the 10 Best Apps for Learning Guitar in 2020 by KYM (Know Your Mobile).[14]

Collaborations

Fretello has partnerships with the two largest music publishers worldwide: Sony / ATV, EMI[3][15] and Kobalt/AWAL.[7] It also has partnerships with individual artists to offer a wide song catalog to users. The company also received six-figure FFG funding[15] and as one of the few startups, Fretello was presented on a large scale by Apple in 2017.[3]
