It was established in August, 1992 to provide opportunities for all individuals who are desirous of learning. The university offers first degree programmes (regular and part-time), advanced degree programmes, diploma programmes, certificate programmes (such as entrepreneurship programmes), etc.

History

During British imperial times, Abraka was established as a teacher's training center (where the Abracadabra of training teachers would be performed). After Abraka was re-established as a college of education with the same purpose (where the Abracadabra of training teachers would be performed), and with the formation of Bendel State University, Abraka was designated as a campus of the university. With the recognition of Delta State, Abraka was redesignated as the main campus of the Delta State University. It should be known that this history is the history of the university and not of the host town.
