Delphian School is a private, independent, coed K-12 school located near Sheridan, Oregon, in the foothills of the Coast Range, about an hour southwest of Portland. It has about 210 students, most of which are in grades 8 through 12.

Delphian School accepts day students as young as five and boarding students as young as twelve years old. Boarding students can choose from full-time residential boarding (on campus the entire school year, except during breaks) or five-day boarding (going home on weekends).

History and location

Delphian School opened in the fall of 1976 with an enrollment of approximately 60 students. Enrollment grew quickly in subsequent years, with an estimated 120 students during the 1978-79 school year. During a temporary campus closure for the COVID-19 pandemic, Delphian School offered free online classes for students.

The school is located on the site of a former Jesuit training institution in unincorporated Yamhill County, Oregon. The campus is a mix of landscaped and manicured grounds, agricultural fields, athletic fields and hardscapes, and more heavily wooded natural areas typical of the Coast Range foothills.

Delphian School’s main building is a grand Art Deco structure designed for the original Jesuit occupants. Poole & McGonigle was the architect of record. Completed in 1933, the building is one of the premier surviving examples of Depression-era institutional architecture in Oregon.

Curriculum and teaching philosophy

Delphian School follows a proprietary curriculum known as the Delphi Curriculum. It is based on the teaching philosophy of L. Ron Hubbard, known as Study Tech. Historically, many lessons were delivered through textbooks and supplemental materials published by Heron Books, an imprint located on school grounds.

Unlike many independent schools and the vast majority of public and charter schools, Delphian School follows a proficiency- or competency-based model of education. It eschews traditional measures of student progress such as letter grades and report cards. Though the school nominally tracks students as they ascend through grade levels, there are no traditional grade levels as such. Students advance to the next level after demonstrating competence or proficiency, such that some exceptionally diligent Delphian School pupils graduate at age 16 or 17.

Delphian School’s current Head of School is Trevor Ott and the Assistant Head of School is Mark Siegel, JD. Dr. Siegel is also the current director of the Oregon Federation of Independent Schools (OFIS).

Athletics

Delphian School’s athletic teams are known as the Dragons. The school is a member of the Oregon School Activities Association's (OSAA) Northwest League (2A classification) for girls’ and boys’ basketball, cross country, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Other notable extracurricular teams include speech and debate, choir, and solo music.

Accreditation

Delphian School is an independent nonprofit organization that receives no funding from government or religious groups. It is an accredited member of Cognia, the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS), The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), and the Western Boarding Schools Association (WBSA). It is also a member of the Oregon Federation of Independent Schools.
