Alfonso ‘Chito’ Zulueta
Alfonso Martin Gimenez Zulueta (June 27, 1962) is an American Filipino entrepreneur and business executive with a track record in the healthcare industry and extensive experience on corporate boards and industry associations. He was a President of Lilly International at Eli Lilly & Co.,[1] President of Emerging Markets,[2] President & General Manager at Eli Lilly Japan KK (a subsidiary of Eli Lilly & Co.),[3] and Chairman of the Japan-based Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America.[4]
Zulueta is an angel investor and CEO of CZ Ventures and has held many board positions, including the current Chairman of Interpharma Investments Limited (Zuellig Pharma).[5]
Early life and education
Zulueta was born in Manila, Philippines[6]
He holds a master's degree in Business Administration from the Darden School of Business Administration of the University of Virginia and a bachelor's degree in Economics from De La Salle University.[7]
Career
Zulueta is an angel investor and chief executive officer of CZ Ventures, a venture capital firm.[8]
He worked with Eli Lilly and Company for more than three decades.[9] Zulueta joined Lilly in 1988 in the Philippines. He held several sales and marketing positions in the U.S. before becoming general manager of the Philippines affiliate in 1995. He also served as Vice President of Global Marketing, Vice President for diabetes, family health, and neuroscience products for the U.S. operations, and President of the company's Asian operations before becoming President of Lilly Japan in 2008.[10][11]
Zulueta retired at the end of 2021[12] from his roles at Lilly as an executive committee member, corporate officer, and President of the company's international business unit,[13] where he was responsible for leading Lilly's business in all geographies outside of the U.S. and Canada.[14]
Zulueta was Chairman of the Japan-based Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) from 2012–2013.[15] He also was a Board Director of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations.
Zulueta serves as Director of the Board of CTS Corporation, Syneos Health Corporation, Amarin Corporation, Glooko, Bridge PayDay, and Calidi Biotherapeutics.[16]
From May 2020 to April 2023, Zulueta was on the Board of Directors of Amarin Corporation.[17]
In April 2022, Glooko appointed Zulueta to the Board of Directors.[18]
In February 2022, Calidi Biotherapeutics appointed Zulueta to its Board of Directors.[19]
In May 2023, Zulueta was appointed by Interpharma Investments Limited of Zuellig Pharma as Non-Executive Chairman of its Board.[20]
Recognition
In July 2018, Zulueta received the Hyogo Prefecture Award from Governor Toshizo Ido.[21]
In April 2023, Zulueta received the Alumni Achievement Award from his alma mater De La Salle University.[22]
Personal life
Zulueta is married to Agnes Zulueta and they have three children.
