Vector Prime is one of the Thirteen Primes in the Transformers series, and notable in being the first to be introduced by Hasbro rather than by Simon Furman, who conceptualized the group. He is typically depicted as the guardian of time and space, traveling across both in order to deal with various threats, such as the monstrous Unicron. He usually transforms into a spaceship, carries a sword called Rhisling that can cut the very fabric of time and space to open portals therein, and has the ability to warp from one place and/or time to another.

History

Unicron Trilogy

Animated series

Vector Prime first appeared in Transformers Cybertron, where he arrived to address the threat of the Unicron Singularity, a massive black hole that threatened the entire universe in the wake of Unicron's demise. So ancient that he predated the Great War between Autobots and Decepticons, Vector was woefully ignorant of the divison in the Transformer race, and was thus deceived by Megatron into giving up his map to the Omega Keys, the artifacts that could give Primus the power he needed to stop the black hole forever. Fortunately, he soon realized his mistake and sided with the Autobots, helping Optimus Prime and his crew in their search for the artifacts.

Prior to approaching the Transformers of this universe, Vector Prime worked with Sentinel Maximus and Alpha Trion to thwart a plot by the minions of Unicron to revive their master. While Maximus dealt with Dark Scorponok and Nemesis Prime, Vector Prime faced off with the evil Ramjet, whom he eventually cast into another dimension. Nemesis Prime managed to reach Cybertron's core and begin using his Dead Matrix on Primus, but was thwarted by the arrival of Omega Prime and imprisoned. Vector Prime then departed to deal with the threat of the black hole, unaware that Soundwave has stolen the Dead Matrix and used it to revive Unicron. Sentinel Maximus and Omega Prime would later face off with the Chaos Bringer before encountering Optimus, who informed them of Vector Prime's sacrifice for the sake of the universe.

Vector Prime also featured in the text story Beast Wars: Reborn in which he is sent to investigate the arrival of Optimus Primal and Predacon Megatron from their native timeline. Upon confronting the party responsible, he is stunned to learn that it is none other than Logos Prime, another ancient Transformer created by Primus. Vector would then engage his brother in an epic battle while Optimus and Megatron competed for Logos Prime's source of power, the Zeonomicon.

Aligned Continuity

Animated series

Vector Prime appears alongside several of the Thirteen Primes to Optimus Prime, whom the Thirteen had ordered trained in order to deal with the threat of Megatronus, one of their own whom the Thirteen imprisoned after he murdered Solus Prime. Despite feeling that Optimus hadn't completed his preparations, Vector and the others granted his request to send him to Earth, as well as imbuing him with portions of their Sparks to grant him further strength for the battle. Following Megatronus' apparent demise, Micronus Prime would be dispatched to recover these Spark portions, leaving Optimus weakened.

Books

Vector Prime is featured in several Aligned Continuity books, including Transformers: The Covenant of Primus and Transformers: Exiles. The former describes him coming into being as one of the Thirteen, being born after Prima and before Alpha Trion. While Prima led the Primes, Vector was their example, embodying the noblest ideals of Primus as they faced off with his nemesis Unicron. Sadly, this left him greatly embittered when Megatronus and the Liege Maximo betrayed the other Primes and the group was divided. Unable to remain with his surviving brethren, Vector departed Cybertron, eventually using his Blades of Time artifact to travel to a dimension outside time and space before scattering its pieces across various worlds.

Through the work of Nexus Prime's components, Optimus Prime eventually acquired the Blades of Time and used them to travel to Vector's dimension, where he sought council from the ancient Prime. Though Vector offered some counsel, he informed Optimus that he could not return with him, as he was a Prime of the past while the future belonged to Optimus.

Generation 1

Fun Publications

Here Vector Prime again appeared as one of the Thirteen Primes, who in this continuity were multiversal singularities-beings who existed across multiple realities but of whom there was only one. Vector Prime notably interacted with the fandom of the series-whom he referred to as living in the Quadwal reality-through his Q&A "Ask Vector Prime."

IDW Publishing

Vector Prime was also one of the Thirteen in IDW Publishing's The Transformers, in which they were the leaders of thirteen tribes of Transformers who fought for dominance over Cybertron. Eventually they were driven from the planet after their forces were defeated by Nova Prime.
