Steven Garza (born September 07, 1978) is an American electronic music event producer, radio programmer, DJ, and on-air presenter, who is also known for creating and hosting the nationally syndicated radio program PrototypeRadio [1] on iHeartRadio[2] and terrestrial radio. Steve began his career in music in the mid-90s as an electronic music event promoter during the early stages of the American rave scene[3].

Events career

In 1994, Steve discovered electronic music via an underground mixtape series called Pure Acid Mixtapes, which began his passion for electronic music[4]. He began his journey first as a DJ, then producing events in 1996 in El Paso, Texas. He produced events under several company aliases such as FA Productions [5], High Caliber[6], and years after eventually settling on PrototypeCulture[7].

Steve started putting on house parties in high school, then underground desert and warehouse raves. As his events became bigger, he produced massive events and festivals in municipal civic centers and coliseums[8].

His companies have produced events in El Paso, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Denver, Colorado, Phoenix, Arizona, Atlanta, Georgia, Las Vegas, Nevada, and is one of the first international rave promoters who produced raves in the U.S. and Mexico in cities such as Juarez, and Chihuahua, Mexico [9].

High Caliber handled bookings for international DJs such as 808 State, Cass, Eric Davenport, Flash Brothers, Jackal and Hyde, Dynamix II, Tilt, Parks and Wilson, Quantum Mechanics, Smitty & Davenport.[10]

In 2020, Steve returned to producing events as PrototypeCulture in Atlanta, Georgia, Las Vegas, Nevada, Los Angeles, California, and Charleston, South Carolina[11].

in 2021 he launched a bi-weekly Techno series called Panic Room with long-time friend and renowned DJ and producer, DJ Pierre[12].

Radio career

Steve's interest in radio started in the late 90s when he formed part of a short-lived FM pirate radio station as a DJ. He continued to pursue his interest in radio by launching an online radio station called Sounderground focused on electronic music.

In 2007, Steve officially began his radio career with Townsquare Media when he was offered the position of the cluster's first Interactive Program Director, to lead the adaptation of Web2.0 in traditional media. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing [13] the digital adaptation and operations of three top-positioned radio stations, KLAQ, KSII, and KROD.

KLAQ is regarded as the region's top concert leader, and Steve was responsible for creating the concert marketing programs for a large roster of concerts and festivals.

In 2010, Steven continued to progress in his career in radio as the first Digital Program Director [14] for iHeartMedia in Atlanta, Georgia. He developed the cluster’s first digital media and branding strategies, overseeing a portfolio of 6 top positioned radio stations, WWPW, WBZY, WWVA-FM, WWLG[15], WUBL, and WGST.

Steven continued his work in the concert space with iHeartMedia, forming part of over 300 concerts for a large number of radio stations including the Jingle Ball Tour, and the iHeartRadio Music Festival.

In 2020, Steve became the first Digital Brand Manager[15] for Entercom in Atlanta, Georgia, an evolved version of his previous programming roles. He managed the digital opeartions for Star WST 94.1 FM and V-103 WVEE-FM, which is regarded as the most important urban radio station in the United States, that features talent such as Big Tigger of BET's Rap City fame, Frank Ski, and Greg Street.

V-103 was named the top urban radio station in the United States[16] by Nielsen ratings in 2020 during his tenure. Steven was also the Digital Brand Manager for its sister station WSTR-FM.

PrototypeRadio

PrototypeRadio

During his time at iHeartMedia, Steve created and hosted a pioneering electronic music radio program called PrototypeRadio that featured interviews and exclusive mixes from some of the biggest DJs in the world such as [17] Orbital, Justice, Kaskade, Deadmau5, Modeselektor, Markus Schulz, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Diplo, Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Avicii, Afrojack, Booka Shade, Swedish House Mafia, Bassnectar, Junkie XL, Afrikaa Bambaataa, Juan Atkins, DJ Pierre, David Guetta, Photek, Umek, Goldie, Squarepusher, Grooverider, DJ Craze, Destructo, DJ Shadow, DJ Sneak, and Mark Farina. After the first hour, three hours followed of electronic music programmed like a traditional radio station. PrototypeRadio launched on terrestrial radio stations Wild 105.7[18] FM and 96.7 FM. The program was one of the first programs of its kind on American terrestrial radio, as DJ mix shows traditionally consist of local DJs who mix dance remixes of a radio station's playlist.

PrototypRadio reached nationally syndication on iHeartRadio[19] after its 6th episode and was featured 5 times a week in various dayparts on iHeartRadio's first EDM channel Electric Sound Stage[20].

PrototyeRadio was nominated for best-syndicated mix show[21] in its first year by PromoOnly and became the official media sponsor for several electronic music festivals including Identity Festival, CounterPoint Festival, Imagine Festival, and Tomorrow World.

PrototypeRadio formed a partnership with Ableton and was the first company that the Digital Audio Workstation sponsored in its history [22].

The program returned as a 24x7 online radio station in 2022, and a branded podcast is also currently featured on iHeartRadio[23], Spotify[24], Amazon[25], Apple[26] and Pandora.
