Recoil is a fictional character in the Transformers series. He is an Autobot allied Nebulan Targetmaster, and partner to the Autobot Kup. In 2011 toy company MasterShooter Collectibles announced a third party Transformer homage to Recoil called Shot Piece.

Transformers: Generation 1

Recoil transforms into a replica of an antique style musket laser. While Kup love's the weapon's old-time-feel, in actuality, he is capable of shooting 100 pulse per second bursts of metal corrosive hydrocloric acid, with a 5 mile range.

The Dreamwave biography for Recoil says he is a retired sports star past his prime who wants to make one last go with the Autobots.

Marvel Comics

Recoil first appeared in issue #4 of the Marvel Comics Headmasters comic in a story called "Bothers in Armor" where he volunteered to be binary bonded to Kup as his Targetmaster partner. The Autobots then fled Nebulos for Earth in an attempt to lure away the Decepticons.

Although Recoil is not depicted, in issue #38 of The Transformers" the Autobots and Decepticons from Nebulos arrive on Earth.

In issue #39 Spike Witwicky introduces Fortress Maximus and the Autobot Targetmasters to his father Sparkplug.

In issue #71 the Autobots surrendered to the Decepticons, and Kup gives up his partner Recoil.

Animated series

Recoil first appeared in the Transformers episode "The Rebirth, Part 1" as a sharpshooter among he rebel Nebulan group lead by Gort. In part 2 the Autobots copied Targetmaster technology Recoil was converted into the gun used by Kup. In part 3 the Autobot and their Nebulans traveled to Cybertron for the final showdown with the Decepticons. He then returned to Nebulos to rid the planet of the Hive's machines.

Blackthorne Publishing

Recoil appeared in the Blackthorne Publishing The Transformers in 3D issue #3 as Kup's sidearm. Kup used Recoil against Cyclonus and the Terrorcons.[1]

Books

Recoil is featured in the Ladybird Transformers book Autobots Strike Oil. During an oil shortage Recoil told Kup and Hot Rod of the legends of an oil lake in the mountains that had disappeared in an earthquake. In the book Recoil is colored red instead of black.[2]

Dreamwave Productions

Kup and Recoil had a single page biography printed in issue #7 of the Dreamwave Productions Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye comic series.

Manga

Recoil appears in the Generations 2011 issue #2 "The Fierce Fighting on Planet Nebulos" where he is part of a team lead by Stepper to obtain a cure for nano-virus which is effecting some Autobots. When the Autobots arrive on Nebulos they are attacked by a group of Decepticons lead by Straxus. The Autobot are able to obtain the cure and bring it back to Earth, where Ricochet's team is commended by Optimus Prime.[3]

A remold of the original Kup toy with an added Targetmaster partner Recoil and new holes to mount him in vehicle mode. Recoil was recolored into Barrel Roller when up was recolored into Orion Pax.

A original third party toy done as a homage to Recoil and meant to work with the Generations Kup toy.[4]
