The Ellen McAllister is one of 17 tugboats in the fleet operated by McAllister Brothers.[1] Most of the tug's efforts are confined to the harbor of New York City.

Vivian Yee profiled the tug and her crew in New York Times on August 20, 2012.[1] She wrote that the crew worked off-and-on six hour shifts. She wrote that most of the McAllister's crews were not New Yorkers, their homes were elsewhere, and would live aboard their vessels for weeks at a time, traveling to their homes for the occasional leave.
