Trimming metadata

I saw you moved Deleted:302nd Military Intelligence Battalion to 302nd Military Intelligence Battalion (United States).

When I first started participating here I was told there weren't as many rules as the wikipedia, but one request was to refrain from moving articles deleted from the wikipedia to article space here, until after any metadata only supported on the wikipedia was trimmed.

I did that for that article. Geo Swan (talk) 09:14, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Can I just import the required templates from Wikipedia instead of removing those that didn't exist? LuisAnton (talkcontribs) 12:31, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Er, I am just another contributor here, so I can't give you official permission. My guess?
The site's owners would appreciate you porting templates -- so long as you make sure they work.

The tricky thing is that most templates at the wikipedia are created by people who have worked hard to make sure they know how templates work. And many of those templates are complicated, depend on many other templates.

I've worked on several other small wikis. One other wiki I contributed to supported core templates, like the {{cite news}} templates. But half a dozen others didn't support ANY templates.
Wikialpha supports a good solid subset of templates.
But, porting the complicated templates for military units? Bear in mind they will rely on a dozen, or dozens, of other templates that also haven't been ported here. If you were an expert at working on templates, you might be able to set them up.
If you aren't an expert at working on templates? Forget it would be my advice.

Okay. Thanks. LuisAnton (talkcontribs) 05:08, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

There are different approaches to disambiguation. Many people think adding disambiguators to article names can be postponed until it is necessary. Others think it should be put in the name, right at the beginning, when it is likely to be necessary some day.

In this particular case it is unlikely to be necessary. Other nation's armies have battalions. But they have different naming conventions. Even if one had a 302nd battalion, it might be an armoured battalion, or an artillery battalion, or whatever. And, even if other nations had one, would it merit an article? Geo Swan (talk) 09:23, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

The article above was imported from Wikipedia, so its name was from WP too. Also, the original name is Deleted:302nd Military Intelligence Battalion (United States), not "Deleted:302nd Military Intelligence Battalion". LuisAnton (talkcontribs) 12:31, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Okay.
Do you think we have enough articles on OTHER battalions, to justify the disambiguator "(United States)"? Geo Swan (talk) 03:12, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

Leaving a redirect

You didn't leave one. That made it more work to find where you put the article. Is there a reason you didn't leave a redirect? Geo Swan (talk) 09:23, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

A redirect from and to what? From Deleted:302nd Military Intelligence Battalion to 302nd Military Intelligence Battalion (United States)? The original name of the article before the move was Deleted:302nd Military Intelligence Battalion (United States), not the article name/hyperlink you put above, as I said in my above reply. Hold the presses...

I see you have ported some templates. If you got them working then you are probably already more of an expert on templates than I am.

I'll warn about something. You ported Template:Al-Odah.

Ten years or so ago I created half a dozen simple templates, connected with Guantanamo captives. There were in use for close to a year, without any template expert noticing them. They did create problems for the 99 percent of contributor who, didn't know how templates and "transclusion" worked.

Eventually other people challenged them, put them up for deletion. I got mad at one administrator, who deleted one, when I thought the deletion discussion should have been closed as "no consensus". But the administrator, was a template expert, which I wasn't. None of those who weighed in with delete opinions was either. That administrator convinced me that the whole approach I had used was a mistake, given the state of the wikimedia foundation software the wikipedia, and wikialpha uses.

I stopped using that template. But a collaborator of mine, Sherurcij, created some improved template, that still had the same weakness of those I created.

Initially, I had thought that, if a whole bunch of articles were all going to contain the same content, I could tuck that editorial content into a template. This would have the huge advantage that, if an update was needed, I would only have to update the editorial content in the template, and the change would be made everywhere.

The disadvantage is that, it was terribly frustrating for other contributors. They would see that editorial content, open the editor, to change it, and then not be able to find it. Why, because the editorial content they wanted to change was in a template, somewhere else.

What that patient administrator explained to me, ten years ago, was that, on the wikipedia, templates weren't allowed to transclude in editorial content. If they render stuff that appears on the screen, it has to be colored, or in a box, so editors can recognize it is special, and look for the template.

Because Sherurcij was my close collaborator, I didn't nominate his templates, but I knew they would have been deleted, if only more wikipedia contributors were knowledgeable about templates.

Best regards for posting to this site. Contribute. Fast! CityOfSilver 03:15, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Greetings, I just heard about this wiki and thought I might pitch in a bit. If you weren't already aware there is a similar wiki on Wiki as the Speedy deletion wiki and they have a bot that imports about to be deleted articles in. Maybe that is something that you could also do.

Additionally, if you go to Wiki and to the Military wiki that I do, there is a category for articles that were deleted from Wikipedia. We have a couple thousand just relating to the Iron Cross recipients of Germany articles that were deleted or redirected.

I am also pretty fluent in Wiki template coding so if you need any help there or if you need some help importing or pruning let me know. Cheers! Reguyla (talk) 19:09, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

What's the "Military wiki"? --LuisAnton (talkcontribs) 03:33, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I've heard of Speedy deletion Wiki (with that exact capitali(z/s)ation). --LuisAnton (talkcontribs) 03:34, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Template:Infobox_country is broken?

Doesn't show up as it is supposed to. Maybe it is a simple fix.. Maybe not.

But since your ported it, I thought I would ask
