The Tricity Transit System Group was formed to submit a bid to build and operate the Ion rapid transit system in Waterloo Region, Ontario.[1] Tricity was one of three groups invited to bid on the system in February 2013.[2][3] Tricity's partners include: SNC Lavalin; EllisDon Capital; Fengate Capital Management; URS Canadian Operations; and Hatch Mott MacDonald.[1]

CTV News reported that Waterloo Region Councillor Jean Haalboom was the sole member of the planning committee to object to Tricity's bid, on the grounds that Tricity partner SNC Lavalin had a history of offering bribes to win bids, and had ties to Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.[4]

In 2012 seven groups of partners indicated an interest in bidding on the system.[5] In February Tricity and two other groups, GrandLinq and Kitchener Waterloo Cambridge Transit Partners, were chosen as those which would be invited to submit proposals. In June the formal request for proposal was issued, and the three groups had until December to complete their bids.

CBC News reported, on February 28, 2014, that a staff report prepared for the Regional Municipality recommended the bid of competitor GrandLinq.[6]
