Captain Shane Murphy is a American Merchant Marine officer employed by Maersk. He was the Chief Mate of the MV Maersk Alabama. C/M Murphy garnered national attention after the attempted hijacking of the Maersk Alabama in April 2009 when he took over as Master for Captain Richard Phillips following Phillips capture by pirates. He is a 2001 graduate of Massachusetts Maritime Academy[1][2] where his father, professor Joseph Murphy teaches an anti-piracy course. The younger Murphy was recently a guest lecturer at one of his father's classes.

Shane Murphy was born and raised in Plympton, Massachusetts.

His older brother David is a carpenter in Boston and his younger brother Kellen is a Deck Officer.


ABC News Good Morning America conducted an exclusive interview with Murphy and second mate Troy Gallagher, on April 15, 2009.[3][4]
