San Jiao Long, also called Tie Dun and Iron Shield, is a fictional character and third-party Transformer homage to Generation 1 Slag and Age of Extinction Slug made by Jin Jiang Toys in 2014.

Jin Jiang Toys

San Jiao Long is a third-party Transformer homage to Generation 1 Slag. He combines with his team members to form Ares.

The name San Jiao Long is Chinese for Triceratops. It can also be translated as "three horn dragon".

A recolor in the colors of Age of Extinction Slug was released under the name Tie Dun. The manufacturer's web site lists this version of the toy under the name Iron Shield.

Development

Renders of the TFC Toys dinosaur combiner toys were posted to ACToys message board in June 2011.[1]

Additional prototype images were posted in October 2011.[2][3]

Color toy images were posted online in November 2011.[4]

The Star Rescue Team dinosaur combiner was released in May 2014 by Jin Jiang Toys.

The Good Morning, Cybertron! podcast for October 31st, 2011 discussed prototype images of the TFC Toys dinosaur combiner in the news.[5]

The Good Morning, Cybertron! podcast for December 26th, 2011 discussed prototype images of the TFC Toys dinosaur combiner in the news. The hosts said it looked sweet and beautiful. They compared it design to that to a Megazord and hoped it would come out in a hurry.[6]

The WTF@TFW podcast for September 20th, 2012 selected concept art of the TFC dinosaur and rescue combiners in Generation 1 Dinobot and Defensor colors as one of the New Picture Picks.[7]

The Shattered Cast Uncut podcast for April 18th, 2014 discussed the TFC Toys dinosaur combiner in the news. The hosts disliked it.[8]

The Shattered Cast Uncut podcast for May 22th, 2014 discussed the TFC Toys dinosaur and rescue combiners in the news. The hosts initially disliked them until they realized how low the cost was compared to other third-party Transformer combiners.[9]

The Shattered Cast Uncut podcast for May 29th, 2014 discussed the TFC Toys dinosaur combiner in the news. The hosts thought the low price made them worth it, and that they looked better than Age of Extinction Dinobots.[10]

The Good Morning, Cybertron! podcast for June 9th, 2014 discussed prototype images of the TFC Toys dinosaur combiner in the news. The host said he had ordered the set and planned to review it.[11]

The Retro Robot Radio show for August 2nd, 2014 covered the release of the box set of the Star Rescue Team dinosaur combiner in the news.[12]

Toys

  • Jin Jiang Toys 005A San Jiao Long (2014)
An original third-party Transformer mold designed by TFC Toys. Turns from humanoid robot to robotic Triceratops. Also becomes the right arm of Ares. Comes with gun, combiner fist, some Infinity Warfare accessories and instructions.
Initial designs of San Jiao Long had his two missile mounted to the under-side of his wings, and becoming part of Ares's gun. The final design had the missiles above the wings, and pinned to not be removable. The pins can easily be removed with heat, and used in their original intended locations.
The instruction included with San Jiao Long do not have his robot mode arms transforming into beast mode legs correctly. The picture on the box has them correct, though.

  • Jin Jiang Toys 005AZ Tie Dun (2014)
A recolor of the initial release of San Jiao Long in purple, intended to reference the Slug toys from the film Transformers: Age of Extinction. The box features art of Age of Extinction Slug.
