Myrtle Hazard was the first woman to serve, as a sailor, in the United States Coast Guard.[1] She enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1917, after the USA entered World War One, and served the duration of the war. She served as an electrician, and radio operator. She was one of the US Governments first female radio operators.

Based on census data, Coast Guard historian Kay Larson speculated she was a war widow.[1]

In 2020 the Coast Guard named its 39th Sentinel class cutter in her honor.

Baltimore native, Myrtle R. Hazard, was cited as being the only woman electrician in the Coast Guard and one of the government’s few female radio operators. A photograph shows her to be a serious-looking brunette with short hair and large, dark eyes. She is apparently in uniform, as she wears a sailor’s collar with stripes."
