Iceland is small country in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was settled by Norse people -- Vikings -- approximately eleven or twelve hundred years ago.

Approximately 100,000 people live there today. For most of its history Iceland was isolated, and not well integrated into the European economy.

Iceland lies on the mid-Atlantic Ridge, and geo-thermal power is an important source of energy in Iceland. Iceland has active volcanoes.[1] A substantial portion of Iceland is covered by sheets of glaciers.
