The Harbour Chieftain is a fireboat operated in Port Alberni, British Columbia.[1][2] Operation and use of the vessel is shared by the Port Albernis's Fire Department, and the Port Alberni Port Authority, a Federal Agency.[3]

The Aluminum hulled vessel is 29 feet long, and has a maximum speed of 30 knots.[3]

She was built in 1994, and initially, she was operated solely by the Port Authority.[4] Port Alberni's city council authorized retrofitting firefighting capability onto the vessel on November 23, 2009, and authorized the sharing arrangement.[5]

Operational career

On June 7, 2014, the fishing boat Western Gambler fouled her propeller, and struck the Harbour Chieftain, at her moorings.[4]

On April 22, 2022, the Harbour Chieftain greeted the frigate HMCS Ottawa with a water salute when she visited Port Alberni.[6]

On September 18, 2022, the fireboat responded to a highly visible fire, where the flaming ship's occupant had to jump into the water, following an onboard explosion.[1][2]
