Grand Patroit was inspired by an unused concept creat by artist Don Figueroa as the Transformer Optimus Prime that turned into a G.I. Joe Rolling Thunder vehicle.[1] The toy was released in early 2011 in two colors, one resembling Generation 1 Optimus Prime and the other green like the Rolling Thunder.[2]
The comic book included with Grand Patriot described him as the commander of the Protectors.
Grand Patriot is not the only G.I. Joe theme third-party Transformer. There has also been Headrobots Snake and X-Transbots Kobra Power Rat.
Other third-party Transformers inspired by Optimus Prime include iGear's Faith Leader and Junkion Blacksmith's Justice Leader.
