Gordon McCreary is Canadian mining engineer and executive of mining companies.[1][2] In 1978 McCreary wrote his Master's thesis on the practicality of exploiting the remote Mary River orebody in Baffin Island. The deposit was located in 1962, by Murray Watts, and was recognized as one of the largest and richest element deposits in the world. But it was left unexploited due to the cost of accessing the difficult and remote site.[3] Not only was it hundreds of kilometers from Baffin Island's shores, but when the terrain wasn't mountainous it was deep layers of frozen tundra -- notoriously difficult to build over.
