Known for basketball prodigy[1]

Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant was the second daughter of Vanessa Laine Bryant and NBA player Kobe Bryant.[2][3][4] Bryant followed her father's example, and played basketball. Commentators reported that she was highly skilled, even though she was only a child.[5][6] Her father had told reporters Gianna was "'hellbent' on playing ball for Geno Auriemma at UConn." He described how he concurred with her judgement of basketball plays.[7] He coached the team she played on.[8]

After his retirement from Professional Basketball Kobe Bryant devoted much of his energy to coaching Gianna's basketball team, and to mentoring other girl's teams.[9] The team was the Newport Mesa.[10]

The Hartford Courant reported, by 2018, that college basketball coaches were asking her father to encourage Bryant to attend their colleges, and join their teams.[11]

USA Today noted, in June 2018, that, at 12 years old, she was already taller than her mother, and speculated that, by the time she was grown, she might be close to as tall as her father.[12] They wrote "That size with Bryant’s skill is an absolutely terrifying combination for a young dynamo who clearly has the ability to dominate the flow of a game on the court."

Mambacita trademark

Vanessa Bryant got a Mambacita tattoo.
Vaness Bryant, modeled sportswear bearing the Mambacita trademark, on Gianna's birthday, to promote the line.[13]

On December 30, 2019, Bryant's father Kobe filed to trademark "Mambacita", her sports nickname, on her behalf.[1][14][15] His sports nickname had been "The Black Mamba", and her nickname reflected that she had mastered his style.[16] Sports jerseys, and other similar sports items, bearing her trademarked name, would be made available for her fans to buy.

In March 2021 her mother, Vanessa, got the nickname Mambacita tattooed on her forearm.[17]

Industry sources report that Kobe was disappointed with how Nike had been promoting his brand, prior to his death.[18][19] Kobe had felt production runs had been too short to satisfy his fans, and that the products were not produced in a wide enough range of sizes. Vanessa chose not to renew the Nike contract, when the existing contract expired in April 2021, and she filed 13 new trademarks.[20][21] In addition to the existing Mambacita trademark the new trademarks she filed included “Play Gigi’s Way,” “Baby Mambas,”, "Lil Mambas", "Lady Mambas" and “Mamba League.”[15][22][23][24][25][26]

Gianna's mother, Vanessa, introduced a line of athletic wear bearing the Mambacita trademark on April 31, 2021.[27][28][29] The line sold out within hours of its introduction. She chose what would have been Gianna's 15th birthday for the introduction. A licensing deal with sportswear manufacturer Nike expired two weeks prior to her introduction of the line.[30][13]

Vanessa, and Gianna's older sister modeled the line, for its introduction.[28][31] All proceeds from the sales will go to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation.[32] The charity's goal is to fund sports programs for youth, in underserved communities.[13]

NBA stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, of the Golden State Warriors, showed their support for the charity by wearing sweatsuits from the line, prior to a game, on the day the line was introduced.[33]
