Occupation politician

Gary Minkoff is an American politician in New Jersey.[1] Minkoff was an interim appointment to the city council of Highland Park, New Jersey in 2002.[2] He ran unopposed for Mayor of Highland Park in 2011.[3]

When Minkoff became mayor the New Jersey Jewish News reported he was the first Orthodox Jew to hold that office.[1] However, they noted he was an opponent of the first Orthodox charter school in the region, writing:

Highland Park Council member Gary Minkoff, who will become the borough’s first Orthodox mayor next month, told the crowd that although his children attend yeshiva, he is both a product and strong advocate of the public schools.

Minkoff argued that Hebrew language charter schools would undermine the traditional institutions that Orthodox Jews use to maintain their traditions.[4]
