The Dinobots are an Autobot subgroup from the Transformers franchise, as opposed to the Dinocons.

History

Generation 1

Animated series

The Autobots created the first Dinobots after learning about dinosaurs from their human allies, but the initial trio proved virtually uncontrollable and were buried. However, after the majority of the Autobots were captured by the Decepticons, Wheeljack and Ratchet, who had created them, uncovered them and fitted them with modules that increased their intelligence. The Dinobots saved their Autobot brethren and soon became such a valued asset to the team that Optimus Prime ordered the construction of a another pair, who would first see action defending the Autobots from their predecessors after Megatron managed to turn them against the Autobots briefly. Following a reconciliation, the Dinobots-now numbering five-became one of the most valuable, if volatile, assets to the Autobot cause.

The Dinobots would play a prominent role in several story arcs in The Transformers, such as when they were the only Cybertronians not affected by the degradation of the Cybertonium element in Earth's atmosphere due to have being built without it. They were thus able to travel to Cybertron and, after briefly being held captive by the Decepticons, managed to return to Earth with enough Cybertonium to repair the Autobots. They would also be involved in the conflict over a mysterious time-lost landmass that became known as Dinobot Island, where they were sent to develop finer control over their abilities. The Dinobots were also heavily featured in The Transformers: The Movie, when Optimus Prime brought them to Earth to help save Autobot City from a Decepticon attack. Following a battle with Devastator, the Dinobots would save Hot Rod and Kup from the Quintessons and their minions the Sharkticons before taking part in the assault on Unicron. They would continue to fight alongside the other Autobots throughout the series, with Grimlock notably creating the Technobots after being granted super-intelligence that he sacrificed to complete his creations.

Though he was not a member of the group-indeed was initially affiliated with the Predacons, descendants of the group's Decepticon enemies-the name of this team would live on in the future Maximal Dinobot.

Marvel Comics

3H Enterprises/Fun Publications

In the Beast Machines comic and toy line, a new faction of Dinobots led by former Predacon Magmatron was introduced as a resistance force opposing the Vehicons under Megatron. Having been modeled after Dinobot, these Dinobots fought alongside Optimus Primal's crew, the Mutants, and the Wreckers against Megatron's forcs.

An alternate version of this continuity described by "Ask Vector Prime" featured the Dinobots in a similar role, but this time with Waspscream-a fusion of Waspinator and Starscream-leading a mixed Maximal/Predacon crew. Megatron was eventually overthrown by Obsidian, but after he was whisked away by Unicron in Transformers: Universe the Dinobots and their allies defeated his hordes.

Shattered Glass

In Transformers: Shattered Glass, Grimlock was the first Dinobot to be constructed by Starscream, only to turn out to be a savage monster that was locked away. Wheeljack later obtained him and upgraded his programming, making him at least somewhat obedient to Optimus Prime, and later created a sizeable force based on Grimlock but modeled after other dinosaurs. However, the creatures still proved to be brutish, and in a fight among themselves several were destroyed while the others scattered. The Autobots and Decepticons each managed to recapture eight-for a total of sixteen-who were subsequently imbued with Embers by the Omega Terminus.

Films

Transformers: Classics

The Transformers: Classics line featured the Dinobots as a three-member Mini-Con team: Terrorsaur, Knockdown and Swoop.

Fun Publications

The New World featured the Dinobots as part of the Mini-Con population created by the Last Autobot, replacing Swoop with the Stegosaurus Knockdown.

Aligned Continuity

Animated series

In Robots in Disguise, the Dinobots are featured as a subspecies of Cybertronian, with notable members being an alternate Grimlock and Scowl, both of whom were introduced as Decepticons, though Grimlock later joined the Autobots under Bumblebee.
