Early life and education

Vigeant attended Worcester State University where he played on the schools football team.[1]

Political career

Vigeant was first elected to the Marlborough City Council in 1993.[2] After serving for 18 years on the city council, including nine years as city council president, Vigeant mounted a campaign for mayor in 2011 when incumbent Nancy E. Stevens announced she would not seek a fourth term. On November 1, 2011, Vigeant narrowly defeated Matthew E. Jones by just 42 votes.[3]

Vigeant has been reelected five times and is currently serving in his sixth term as mayor.[2]

Prior to becoming mayor, Vigeant ran two unsuccessful campaigns for positions in the Massachusetts State Legislature. The first came in 2004, when he lost to Rod Jane in the Middlesex and Worcester District State Senate Republican Primary.[4] Jane would go on to lose to incumbent State Senator Pam Resor in the general election.[4] Four years later, Vigeant ran for the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He successfully earned the Republican nomination for the 4th Middlesex district, but eventually lost to Democrat Danielle Gregoire in the general election.[5]

Vigeant endorsed incumbent United States Senator Scott Brown in the 2012 United States Senate election in Massachusetts.[6]
