In Voltron: Legendary Defender, Allura receives a notable redesign; as opposed to her blonde-haired, fair-skinned interpretation in previous series, she appears hear as a pointy-eared alien with a darker skin tone and white hair. This is her normal form, as in the series her species are capable of changing their size and other physical attributes to mimic other species, a skill the enables them to serve as effective diplomats. In another drastic departure, she is depicted as one of the last two known surviving members of her race, the other being her faithful retainer Coran. The pair were placed in stasis shortly before the destruction of their homeworld Altea by the Galra Empire, led by the evil Emperor Zarkon. This was done at the insistence of Allura's father Alfor, who also ordered that the components of Allura's creation, Voltron, be hidden away to keep them out of Zarkon's hands.

Allura and Coran were eventually awakened some 10,000 years later by a group of humans from Earth: Shiro, Lance, Pidge, Keith, and Hunk, who had arrived in the Blue Lion after finding it on their home planet. Allura and Coran soon learned that their home world of Altea had been destroyed and the Voltron lions scattered, but Allura took heart from the encouragement of an A.I. recreation of her father, who encouraged her to take the stand she had wanted to take 10,000 years prior. As such, Allura called upon her unlikely new allies to become the new pilots of Voltron: Lance had already piloted the Blue Lion, Pidge was tasked with finding the Green Lion, Hunk with piloting the Yellow Lion, Keith with recovering the Red Lion, and Shiro with leading the team in the Black Lion. Allura also befriended the Space Mice, a group of Altean mice who had been in her stasis unit with her for the entirety of her ten thousand year hibernation and thus developed a psychic connection with her.

The new Paladins soon obtained all five lions and were successful in defeating a ship commanded by Sendak, one of Zarkon's top officers. However, they struggled to form Voltron again afterwards, leading Allura to putting a great deal of pressure on them in an effort to inspire greater teamwork; she eventually succeeded, though it was more through their shared resentment of her tactics than through her example as a leader. However, Allura did her best to show her compassion, particularly to the natives of Arus, the planet that her Castle of Lions had been hidden on for millennia. This would lead her to accompany Keith to go to their aid when they were apparently attacked by remnants of Sendak's forces, only to learn that the Galra commander had lured them away in order to attack the undermanned and temporarily powerless castle. Fortunately, between Allura's connection with the space mice and Pidge's efforts, they were able to reclaim the castle and capture Sendak.

When Pidge subsequently revealed her female nature, Allura was already aware due to speaking with the likewise aware Space Mice, and had attempted to strike up a connection given their presence as the only female members of the Voltron team. The ship soon departed Arus and headed for a nearby Balmera, from which Hunk and Coran had obtained a crystal to serve as the castle's new power source. After defeating the Galra forces occupying the ancient being, the Voltron team learned that the Balmera was dying, and attempted to evacuate the inhabitants only to find it impossible, particularly as a Robeast arrived and began attacking. Left with no other options, Allura took part in an ancient Altean ritual, sharing her mystical energies with the creature in an effort to heal it; this proved successful, but Allura was left greatly weakened as a result. She would soon suffer an even greater blow, as Sendak's use of a Galra crystal to temporarily power the castle corrupted her father's A.I. duplicate, and Allura was forced to destroy it in order to save the castle.

More determined than ever to defeat the Galra, Allura joined the paladins in infiltrating a Galra transport hub in search of information, and insisted upon boarding a ship that arrived to deposit cargo in search of more intelligence. Using her camouflage abilities to pass as a Galra soldier, she and Shiro were able to board the ship only to be discovered, and Allura was captured insuring Shiro's escape. She was soon brought to Zarkon, and attempted to attack him only to be blasted by Haggar and thrown in a cell. However, the paladins and Coran were able to rescue her with some anonymous help from an unknown Galra, and Allura opened a wormhole for their escape. Unfortunately, Haggar blasted the portal, disrupting the vortex and scattering the castle and the lions across space.
