The Algoma Transport (also known as the Canadian Transport from 1979 to 2011) is a self-unloader launched in 1979 to serve Upper Lakes Group, Inc, until it was sold to Algoma Central Corporation.[1]

History

Built by Port Weller Dry Docks in St. Catherines, Canada, the Canadian Transport was launched on April 17, 1979. There used to be another Canadian Transport that was built before the second one was but was too big to make it into the Great Lakes via the Saint Lawrence Seaway.[1] The Canadian Transport was constructed due to a long-term coal supply contract between Upper Lakes Group and Ontario Hydro. Two other boats were constructed for this contract, the Canadian Enterprise and the Canadian Olympic. On June 24th, 2001, the engine room of the Canadian Transport caught fire while it was unloading at the Nanticoke power generating station. This was due to a fuel line breaking and starting a fire. The local fire departments put out the fire and there was no injuries. It had to be sent to Port Weller Dry Docks for repairs for 3 weeks.[1] In 2011, the Upper Lakes shipping fleet was sold to Algoma Central Corporation and was renamed to the Algoma Transport.
