Alex Brown is an American insurance attorney who works in the state of Maryland. He is widely considered one of the top lawyers in the Mid-Atlantic region due to his two decades of experience handling complex insurance litigation and transactional matters.[1][2]

Career

Brown’s career began in 1999. After earning a BA in English language and literature from The University of the South and his Juris Doctor Degree from The University of Baltimore, Brown served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Maryland Insurance Administration.

After his time with the Insurance Administration, Brown entered private practice and secured multiple million-plus dollar verdicts for his clients.

Since 2014, Alex Brown has been a partner at the law firm of Shapiro, Sher, Guinot & Sandler, a well-known and highly respected law firm in the Maryland area. Brown serves as the head of the firm’s insurance law practice, where he advises multiple clients, from insurance providers to corporate entities, on insurance-related litigation and business matters.

Over his two decades of experience, Brown has successfully won verdicts and accrued remarkable achievements. Important accomplishments include:

  • Lead counsel in defending a security company with nationwide operations against a $40M lawsuit; the case was eventually settled within a year of the initial filing.
  • Obtaining a $7M jury verdict in a complex insurance subrogation case filed due to a massive fire that damaged a four-story apartment building.
  • Securing a summary judgment for a commercial client in defending against alleged breaches of contract and business torts; also obtaining a six-figure judgment on counterclaims for the client.
  • Lead counsel in a case against a large financial services company alleging breach of contract, negligence, negligent supervision, and conversion of client funds. Brown obtained a jury verdict of $1.4 million with an additional six-figure sum in punitive damages.
  • Successfully defended a financial advisor in arbitration, getting all claims dismissed and the complaint removed from the advisor's record.
  • Successfully filing a temporary restraining order against the Maryland Insurance Commissioner, preventing the Commissioner from enforcing orders outside the scope of his authority.
  • Defending a large national insurer against claims that their employees were terminated based on discrimination, which is illegal under Maryland insurance law.
  • Securing a six-figure judgment against a government defense contractor
  • Successfully representing numerous Maryland insurance producers who had their licenses revoked or investigated; leading to many clients’ retention of their professional licenses and/or substantially reduced penalties.
  • Successfully representing apartment complex owners pursuing an insurance claim for insurance coverage for property damage and other losses arising from an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, a complicated form of bacterial pneumonia; the insurer reversed its claim denial and provided coverage.
  • Leading the drafting of an appellate brief on behalf of the Maryland Insurance Commissioner, in a case in which Maryland’s highest court upheld decisions of the Commissioner.

Alex Brown has received numerous awards for his accomplishments in the Maryland court system. He was cited in Maryland Super Lawyers, a website that rates outstanding lawyers by location, in 2014 and 2015. Brown has also been named an A.M. Best Client Recommended Attorney for the Maryland area for years.

Brown currently serves on a variety of professional associations. He is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, where he serves as the Vice-Chair of the Casualty and Liability subcommittee. He also serves on two committees of the Defense Research Institute.
