Winthrop Gardiner Jr. was a member of the family which received a royal grant of historic Gardiners Island in 1639.[1] In 1936, he inherited the Island. Within a year he sold it to Sarah Diodati Gardiner, who The New York Times described as a "distant cousin".
Gardiner married six times, and was divorcing Nancy Wakeman when he died of cancer.[1] He had been married to Sonia Henie, an ice skater.
