The quadratic formula is the mathematical formula used to find the two real and distinct, real and identical, or imaginary and distinct roots of a quadratic equation of the form ax^2+bx+c.
The quadratic formula is -b±(b^2-4ac)/2a and the discriminant which determines what type of roots the equation will have is b^2-4ac.
Value of b^2-4ac | Type of solution |
> 0 | Real and distinct roots |
= 0 | Real and identical roots |
< 0 | Imaginary and distinct roots |
