Question

So when did this site start? Can we use it for articles that got deleted for lacking notability on Wikipedia? Mathewignash 07:01, 3 July 2011 (MDT)

Yes, you can. We're a very new wiki; currently in the process of writing our policies and guidelines, and how they differ from Wikipedia's, but the general idea is that we do not have notability requirements and original research is not forbidden. If you have any further questions, feel free to reply below. Govind 11:10, 3 July 2011 (MDT)
Well, I wrote a bunch of articles about minor league fictional characters that got deleted on Wikipedia, and more are being nominated for deletion there, so if it's okay, I'll keep putting them here. Feel free to keep copying articles that are under deletion nomination on Wikipedia to here. Mathewignash 13:44, 3 July 2011 (MDT)
You are certainly welcome to preserve these articles on WikiAlpha. Govind 13:59, 3 July 2011 (MDT)

Licensing problems; discussion at Wikipedia regarding this site

There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia regarding licensing of Wikipedia content for this site. The exact issue is regarding the release of content on this site into the public domain, which is not an issue for non-Wikipedia content. However, Wikipedia content is licensed under the GFDL, which requires a "share-alike" agreement, meaning that all subsequent uses must also be licensed under the GFDL, even if the original content was deleted or otherwise altered (as the license is irrevocable once issued). The discussion can be found here, and I invite you, as one of the site administrators, to comment and participate there. I hope this can be resolved in a manner that is satisfactory to everyone. Cheers. Elektrik Shoos 12:01, 4 July 2011 (MDT)

An addendum: all written Wikipedia content is also licensed under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license, and can be used under that as well. Elektrik Shoos 12:14, 4 July 2011 (MDT)
Hi, it appears that Richard is addressing the concerns on that discussion. Thank you for letting us know. Govind 23:21, 4 July 2011 (MDT)
Hi. :) I'm Maggie Dennis, aka Moonriddengirl, on English Wikipedia. I'm here to help with the attribution issues. I was looking for the articles actually on the Wiki, so I could put the attribution list on the talk pages of them, but I can't find them all. (10th Hole Productions, for instance, doesn't come up with a match, but Blue Bacchus does.) I'll see which ones I can find, and maybe you can help me with the other ones. :) --Moonriddengirl 01:33, 6 July 2011 (MSD)
Oh, most of these are not yet deleted on Wikipedia! That means that the history is still available for you guys. For example, for "Absolute FreeBSD", all you have to do is go into the history and copy & paste it to a stable place on your project (maybe the talk page of the article itself; that's what we do on Wikipedia when preserving content from a deleted article.) Let me see which ones are gone.... --Moonriddengirl 01:41, 6 July 2011 (MSD)
Ah, thanks for letting me know. :) I will take care of the rest of these myself. Govind 01:49, 6 July 2011 (MSD)
Happy, if I can help. :) I've got the histories for the four that have already been deleted (I figured out your "Deleted:" space. :D). The list of what is and isn't is visible at my talk page here. I hope you have a bot that can help you with this; much simpler. If it has to be done manually, it'll be a lot easier to work from [1]. I've created a collapsed box at the bottom of that section with direct wikilinks to the existing articles. If you run into any problems (like if any of them disappear before you can snag the history), please let me know. I'll be glad to help resurrect any histories that become inaccessible in the meantime. --Moonriddengirl 02:02, 6 July 2011 (MSD)
I started an "essay" about the editor attribution stuff at WikiAlpha:Attribution; feedback most welcome. Wnt (talk) 01:28, 20 July 2011 (MSD)

Do you take requests for deleted Wikipedia pages?

Would it be possible to start a page where users could place the name of a deleted Wikipedia article, and then a bot will recover it from Wikipedia and place it on WikiAplha? Mathewignash 17:42, 7 July 2011 (MSD)

Unfortunately, once an article is already deleted, it cannot be retrieved. Articles listed for deletion but which are yet to be deleted (or have their deletion nomination rejected) are automatically stored in the Deleted: namespace. Govind (talk) 05:45, 10 July 2011 (MSD)
There is a page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:UND where you can request deleted pages be placed in userspace. They are restored with full history. Then you copy them over. Mathewignash (talk) 17:46, 10 July 2011 (MSD)
Thanks for letting me know. We'll definitely get something like this set up in the near future. Govind (talk) 20:24, 10 July 2011 (MSD)

An easier way

Rather than Wikipedia:UND, which only works for uncontroversial deletions, it's easier to just ask an admin from Category:Wikipedia administrators who will provide copies of deleted articles for an article. Moonriddengirl is in that category and has helped with article histories for attributions on WikiAlpha. She may be willing to help with articles also. You could ask on her talk page at Wikipedia. Question about disambig pages

I was wondering something. Many of the pages imported from Wikipedia are diamabiguated in their titles (like calling it Warpath (Transformers)), but on Wikialpha it's the ONLY article called Warpath right now. Should there be a disambig page started for a page like that the disambigs to that article? Even if it's only the one article for now? Mathewignash (talk) 21:19, 17 July 2011 (MSD)

Sure, why not. Red links are not inherently bad; they in fact encourage article creation. By all means DAB them. Govind (talk) 22:18, 17 July 2011 (MSD)
Is this good? Warpath. Mathewignash (talk) 22:39, 17 July 2011 (MSD)

New articles are coming

BTW, besides the hundred or so articles deleted from Wikipedia, I started to write new ones for new articles that I know would be deleted in a second for lacking notability. see Toxitron, a new villain from a comic book that just came out. I'm sure WP would say a comic book villain with ONE appearance so far would not be notable enough for them. I'll keep citing sources on new articles, so at least they are RELIABLE, if not notable. Mathewignash (talk) 22:44, 17 July 2011 (MSD)

That's great. Govind (talk) 00:13, 20 July 2011 (MSD)

Question about deleted article archive?

Maybe you already thought of this, but I didn't see it anytwhere. I was just curious does Wikialpha keep any history as to WHY wikipedia deleted a particular article? I'm asking because I often particupare in deletion nominations, and I'm usually pretty forgiving of articles for lacking notability by Wikipedia standards, but I do vote to delete articles that are hoaxes, or that duplicate information on another page. Would Wikialpha have any way of telling if an article was deleted for being hoax as opposed to being non-notable? If there is no way to automate this, can we include a link on the copy page to the deletion nomination on Wikipedia, so upon viewing an article it could be easily determined WHY they deleted it? Otherwise Wikialpha is open to being a repository for hoaxes. Mathewignash (talk) 22:11, 18 July 2011 (MSD)

The original deletion discussion can always be found at Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/page name Govind (talk) 09:29, 19 July 2011 (MSD)

email

Is there any way to email you directly to talk about a potential problem I would rather not speak of in public? Thanks Mathewignash (talk) 22:12, 18 July 2011 (MSD)

http://en.wikialpha.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/Govind should work. Govind (talk) 09:25, 19 July 2011 (MSD)

String functions?

I noticed you added Template:Strlength ... just thought I should mention - according to discussions [2] the Wiki software is one configuration line away from enabling a full suite of string functions. I don't know if you're interested but just thought I should toss that out there - maybe if it doesn't cause catastrophe here Wikipedia will use it. ;) Wnt (talk) 01:55, 20 July 2011 (MSD)

Can you delete history?

Any chance of deleting the history of the creation of the spam accounts? Mathewignash (talk) 06:09, 23 July 2011 (MSD)

Why on earth would I do that? Special:ListUser looks bigger now. Govind (talk) 06:51, 23 July 2011 (MSD)
Can you rename name those users? Mathewignash (talk) 14:31, 23 July 2011 (MSD)

Email

I sent you an email the other day (through the WikiAlpha email interface). I was wondering if you got it. Thanks. Web (talk) 09:49, 26 July 2011 (MSD)

Ah, I seldom check my email. Thanks for letting me know :) Govind (talk) 15:08, 26 July 2011 (MSD)
Don't worry. Those templates are just placeholders until we have enough article content for a decent Main Page. I could just as easily replace the templates on Main Page with Coming soon.... Govind (talk) 15:10, 26 July 2011 (MSD)
