Todd Lewis Archibald is a retired Justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.[1] He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his public service.[2]
He was the founding editor of the Annual Review of Civil Litigation (2001-2022) and is currently the senior editor of the Advocates’ Quarterly. He is the author of the 2023 text Litigation and Administrative Advocacy: The Art & Science of Persuasion and Co-Author of the Annual text The Ontario Superior Court Practice. He is also co-author of the annually updated text Profiting from Risk Management and Corporate Compliance. He was also awarded the 2015 David Walter Mundell Medal.[3]
Early life and education
Archibald was raised in Essex and Sarnia, Ontario.[3]
He received his Honours B.A. from the University of Western Ontario in 1974.[3]
He is a graduate of the University of Toronto Law School with an LL.B. in 1977 and later received his LL.M from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1985. Archibald was called to the Ontario Bar in 1979.[1]
He was firstly a law clerk to the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1979, then an Assistant Crown Attorney in the City of Toronto from 1980 to 1989.[4]
He became a Senior Solicitor for the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto in 1989 and 1990. He then joined Gardiner Roberts LLP as a civil and commercial litigator. He became a partner of Borden & Elliott LLP in 1992 and practiced in the fields of civil, commercial and criminal litigation until his judicial appointment.[5][6]
Career
Archibald was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto on January 8, 1999. In his judicial career, he presided over all areas of the court including civil, family, criminal and Divisional Court. He was the acting Regional Senior Justice in 2019-2020.[7][8]
Archibald retired from the Ontario Superior Court on May 1, 2021, and commenced his arbitration and mediation practice at Archibald Mediation and Arbitration Solutions Inc.[9]
Awards
In 2002, Archibald received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. In 2012, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.[2]
He received Osgoode Hall's Professional LLM teaching award in 2008.[10]
In 2015, he received the David Mundell Medal from the Ontario Attorney General for legal scholarship.[11][12]
Archibald received Canada's 150 Community Award for Legal Teaching and Scholarship in 2017.[13]
He received Osgoode's Alumni Gold Key award and the Ontario Tennis Association's Distinguished Service Award in 2019.[3][2]
He was awarded the Ontario Bar Association's Foundation Award for outstanding contribution to legal education in 2020. He was awarded the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellowship Award for community service in 2023.[3][2]
