Roger Puta was a prolific photographer, who specialized in taking photos of trains, mass transit and railroad infrastructure. Puta was born in Naperville, Illinois, and he attended St. Procopius Academy. After a stint in the US Navy, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, a job that provided him an opportunity to travel, and start his collection of transit photos. Puta was later a partner in a tour bus company.

After his death Mel Finzer, his literary heir, made the decision to place his photos in the public domain, and they have subsequently been very widely reproduced. His childhood friend, Marty Bernard, scanned and digitized close to ten thousand color slides, and put them online on the flickr photosharing website. Finzer and Bernard's only request to re-users of Puta's photos is that they credit him when they re-use them.
