Early Life and Education

Hershman was born in 1954 in Brooklyn, NYC.[2] As a child, he was influenced by field trips to museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hershman always dreamt about becoming an artist, creating sketchbooks, and experimenting with color. While choosing a career, he chose a secure option and pursued medicine. In 1986, Hershman completed BA Pre-medical in Bioscience/Psychology and graduated cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1980, he earned a UCSF – Doctor of Podiatric Medicine D.P.M. from California College of Podiatric Medicine.[2] In 1983, Hershman completed his surgical residency in Foot and Ankle at Westchester General Hospital. Since 1992, he has been associated as a board member and fellow of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.[2][3][4][5][7]

Career

Hershman leads a dual life as a podiatric surgeon and fine art painter. He secured a path in medicine, and while he was graduating, he was also evolving a body of artwork, exploring various forms of drawings and paintings. While hosting a party in 1992, with many of his new artworks hanging in his home, Hershman was invited by a guest, a curator at the Spectrum Gallery, to participate in a group show she was organizing. He participated, and all his art pieces were sold.[2][3][8] Following that, he has taken part in various exhibitions worldwide.[4][6][7]

In 2020, one of Hershman's pieces was jury-selected for a group show at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco.[2] In May 2021, he had a successful show, Under the Influence: Donald and Victor, at the Salomon Arts Gallery in New York.[2][3] The painting embodied his intuitive need to pursue interests as he paid a loving tribute to his former partner, who succumbed to AIDS in 2001.[4][5][8][9] Hershman's paintings recognized the unique attributes of Arimondi's work, featuring a display that is compassionate and reflective of modern times. Arimondi was a famed Italian-American model and art photographer whose unique eye and sensuous style captivated the world. At the time of his death, Hershman inherited his estate, including his vast collection of photography and art.[1]

Hershman has been contributing to art for 25 years. His technique of using shadows has always been a key to his paintings. In 2022, Art Love Gallery owner Jackie Fuchs encouraged him to focus on this subject for a new exhibit. He exhibited a show entitled Sexuality and Shadows, which became successful.[4][6]
