The Decepticon Hunter was first featured as a weapon kept aboard the prison ship Alchemor as a precaution against breakout by Decepticon inmates, hence its name. The device was designed so that it could transform into any weapon its wielder could imagine, though it appears to have some limitations. The Alchemor carried at least three Decepticon Hunters aboard, which were designed to be used in tandem to increase the power of their wielders. When Megatronus caused the Alchemor to crash, one was aboard the fragment carrying Fixit and Steeljaw while the other two ended up on the portion of the ship that became "Decepticon Island." The former was eventually found by Bumblebee's team of Autobots and replicated so that he, Sideswipe, and Strongarm each wielded one.

In preparation for his confrontation with Megatronus, Optimus Prime was given the Prime Decepticon Hunter, a sword-weapon with the ability to fire energy blasts. All four of these weapons would see use when Megatronus arrived, with Bee and his teammates unlocking the combined power of their weapons and seemingly vaporizing Megatronus. Steeljaw later obtained the pair locked within Decepticon Island, and used their power to seize control. After acquiring Bumblebee's Hunter he combined the three to unlock a powerful suit of armor and a weapon with numerous abilities, rivaling if not surpassing the Prime Decepticon Hunter. Fortunately, Bumblebee was able to retrieve the combined weapon and use its powers to defeat Steeljaw.
