Tuang Za Khai (born August 18, 1986) is the Zomi (meaning Zo People) emerging young and active writer, author, and researcher. One of his books called A Hizolo Omlo (Nothing Is Impossible) published in 2014 was one of the bestselling books in Chin State. He regularly writes fiction or nonfiction articles in several local Journals, magazines, and newsletters. He is also known as a pioneer researcher on plant-microbe interaction among the Zomi for his scientific research career on plant-plant pathogen interaction.

Education and Academic Career

Tuang started his early education at Primary School, Pakzaang, Tedim Township, and at Private High School, Mualbeem, Tedim Township. He then joined High School in Tedim (Lawibual) and passed the matriculation examination in 2003. During his primary to high school years, he passed almost every grade of examinations with first-class and received several first prizes and awards.[1]. He joined University at Kalay University[2] in 2003 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Botany with first-class, second division, in 2008. In 2010, he obtained a Master of Science (Credit) in Plant Science. While studying for bachelor's and master's degrees at Kalay University, he actively participated in the University Christian Fellowship, Zomi Siamsin Kipawlna, Zomi/Chin National Day celebration, etc. He was an executive committee member of the Student Christian Union and was also served as a vice secretary of Zomi Siamsin Kipawlna in 2008-2009[3].

Then, he was awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship and studied Doctor of Philosophy in China for four years[1]. In 2020, he completed his DPhil degree in Plant Functional Genomics at Central China Normal University. Since 2016, he has served as a lecturer at Kalay University until the military coup in 2021. Due to his involvement in the civil disobedient movement or his choice of democracy, particularly the National League for Democracy, the Military Junta expelled him from his position in May 2021[4][5]

He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, The Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, funded by the Lady Davis Fellowship Trust.

His first scientific research paper was published in Plant, Cell & Environments in 2019,[6] and continuously published his second paper in 2020 in the same journal[7], his third paper was published in Oil Crop Science[8] in 2021,[9] and his fourth paper in Plant Cell Reports[10] in 2022[11]. He is the first lecturer in the history of Kalay University to publish scientific papers in high-ranking journals such as Plant, Cell & Environments yearly and continuously for four years.

As a Writer and Author

Tuang Za Khai wrote several articles in several magazines, newsletters, and books. He wrote more than 100 non-fiction articles and is an author, co-author, or editor of several books. His best-known book is a small book called A Hizolo Omlo[12] (Nothing Is Impossible) published in 2014 and sold-out thousands of copies in Chin State. He wrote several articles in News and Magazines, such as 'Covid 19 Lungo A Kihawi Maw, Ahihkeh Koipan Hongpiang?'[13][14] (How did Covid-19 start and where did it come from?), 'Gam Aki Halhal Nawnloh Hunciang…'[15] (When people are stopping burning the forest…), Zomi Idol 'IDOL' Laimal Buaina[16] (Arguments on the word 'Idol'' amongst the Zomi Idol) in the Zomi Daily; 'Nu le Pa' Thumang, Anahlawh Peek[17] (Blessing are those who obedience to their parents), Sakol Khekhap (Scientific benefits of Indian Penny-wort)[18], Bang hangin Botany sinloh phamawh (Why is it necessary to study Botany?)[19] etc. He wrote articles in each volume of Zomi Siamsin Magazine, continuously from Vol. 1 to 5 besides writing in several other local Journals and Magazines, such as Zolai Zuunna, The Zomi Post, Tongsan Media, etc. The group image on the left indicated the photo which was taken on Chin National Day, 2005, a group photo of Zomi Siamsinte (Zomi University Students). Personal life

Tuang Za Khai is the youngest son of Rev. Thawn Za Nang[20] (Guite) and Nu Ciang Za Niang[21] (Neekgen) from Pakzaang, a very small village in Tedim Township, Chin State, Myanmar. Both his father and one of his elder brothers served as a pastor in the Baptist Church, Pakzaang. He was born on August 18, 1986, on a Monday evening. Through being born and brought up in a godly Christian family, he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior only in 1999 when he was 14.  He believes in the Holy Trinity. He was married to Cing Sen Zen (Advocate) and the Lord blessed them with two precious children, a girl, and a boy. As seen in the family photo on the left, Tuang Za Khai has two elder brothers and four sisters. He was sitting under the holding of his mother.
