Irene Gabriela Astanoaiei was a Romanian medical doctor and long-term resident of Canada, whose disappearance triggered controversy in April 2008.[1][2][3][4]

Astanoiei was unable to navigate the process where foreign doctors can get Canadian credentials, and ended up working as an exotic dancer.[1] According to the Toronto Sun she had been married to a man living in the United States. According to the Toronto Sun she quit dancing in 2004, and left her marraige, when a wealthy married boyfriend started to support her.

She maintained apartments in the Toronto area and in Montreal.[1]

She was last seen alive on March 10, 2008 in the company of her boyfriend.[1] Her car was found parked near a lake outside of Montreal, and her coat was found abandoned on the ice covering the lake. Because Police suspect she committed suicide they will not publish the contents of a note found in her coat pocket.[5]
